Waste has energy potential, says expert

19 June 2009

Household waste can help produce power in the UK, with an increasing number of different uses being discovered for it, an expert has revealed.

Mike Webster, Senior Consultant at Waste Watch, said everything from kitchen waste to sewage can potentially be used to source gas and create power.

"You can burn it just to produce electricity and to put it in buses, you know you can have buses running off them and lorries," he suggested.

Sainsbury's is even starting to use leftover food to create power for its lorries, Mr Webster claimed.

A study from Europa recently found that reaching the 2020 renewable energy targets is expected to lead to around 2.8 million jobs in the renewable energy sector.
