Energy bills 'to quadruple' by 2020

22 June 2009

Price comparison site uSwitch.com has revealed how the average household energy bill could rise to as much as £5,000 in ten years' time.

The price comparison site said that at present the average bill stands at £1,243, although this could spiral as providers look to boost energy efficiency and invest in a low carbon future.

Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com, commented: "The government has been banging the drum for energy efficiency for a while now, but consumers have been reluctant to spend money on these measures."

It is estimated that bills could peak as much as £5,000 in ten years' time as the additional cost of investment contributes £548 a year alone to consumers' bills.

Speaking to the supplier is one way of being able to reduce costs, suggested Ms Robinson, although consumers can also slash costs by comparing products online.

Ernst & Young's Annual Discretionary Income Study recently said that average electricity and gas prices have fallen by eight per cent and five per cent respectively since their 2008 peak.
