UK 'has potential' for wind power stations

26 June 2009

Wind energy could potentially be sourced from the UK, which is the best-placed country in Europe, it has been revealed.

Helena Wright, Renewable Energy Advisor for British Eco Energy, revealed that turbines need to be accepted as a viable means of creating energy throughout the country.

"We do have quite a good emerging wind energy industry, and we are behind Europe in terms of renewable energy, but we do actually have the potential to lead the way with regards to wind," she continued.

Wind could prove to be the UK's strong point, Ms Wright noted, despite it lagging behind countries such as Germany at the moment where they have 200,000 jobs in renewable energy.

These comments follow news from the Department of Energy and Climate Change which suggested that UK offshore winds have the potential to provide an extra 25GW of new electricity generation capacity.
