A pensioner from Yorkshire has launched a protest against soaring energy costs by living without gas and electricity in her one-bedroom home. Angered by the "sky high" bills she has received, Anne Myall, 72, has not used her lights, heating, hot water or electrical appliances for more than two weeks. She claims to have received "inaccurate" bills of more than £700 a quarter from her provider, despite being economical with the energy she uses. Ms Myall has been eating salads and takeaways instead of cooking, using extra blankets to stay warm and candles for lighting and relying on books and a battery-operated radio for entertainment. She said she was surprised at how well she has managed to cope without gas and electricity and believes others should do the same. "If everybody switched their meter off for a week just to see what it's like, it would send a message to these companies that they're not untouchable," she remarked. According to recent research from uSwitch.com, some 5.4 million UK households are now living in fuel poverty.
