uSwitch.com has welcomed the initial findings of Ofgem's probe into the UK energy market, insisting the recommendations made by the regulator will benefit consumers. According to the independent price comparison and switching service, many sections of society - including the elderly and the fuel poor - are missing out on competition in the market for gas and electricity. The steps outlined by Ofgem, which include giving customers more information about the different tariffs available and introducing greater billing transparency, should help to solve this problem by allowing consumers to make educated choices. "Ofgem's proposals will breathe a new lease of life into the UK's energy market, opening it up so that more people will be able to benefit," said Ann Robinson, Consumer Policy Director at uSwitch.com. Recent research from the price comparison site revealed that 5.4 million households are now in fuel poverty. This means they are spending 10% or more of their net income on gas and electricity.
