A new survey reveals that Brits are wasting almost three working days a year waiting for workmen to arrive.
The study, conducted by Which?, found that the equivalent of nearly 20 million working days in the last year were spent waiting for workmen to turn up.
By sector, workmen from gas and electricity suppliers kept people waiting the longest - around four and a half hours on average.
This, together with the cost of hiring, could make employing workmen to rectify problems in areas such as heating systems a frustrating activity.
Neil Fowler, editor, Which? magazine, said: "It's high time retailers and the UK's workmen raised their game to meet the needs of consumers in the 21st century.
"We'd like to see firms offering narrower delivery or appointment time slots - if the supermarkets can do it, we see no reason why other retailers can't do the same."
