Mayor says solar panelled warehouse important

3 October 2006

A new environmentally-friendly warehouse, which utilises a hemp roof and solar power panels, has been congratulated by the town mayor as an "important" development.

Michael Ladd, the mayor of Southwold, has celebrated the new Adnams environmentally-friendly distribution warehouse in his town.

He told BBC News 24 that the warehouse – which includes a grass covered roof over 220 square metres, solar panels and hemp and lime walls for temperature regulation – was a "fantastic building".

The building cost £14 million to construct but the town is hoping the new design will help save £50,000 a year on its fuel bills because of the increased energy efficiency it offers.

Mr Ladd concluded: "Traditionally if you look at warehouses they are large, ugly buildings and I think it is again very, very important for this area that this is actually unseen from the road.

"It is an area of outstanding natural beauty so of course we do want to do things which are going to be good for the environment."
