Boilers break down after gas leak

8 March 2007

Residents in the North East have been hit by an energy failing double whammy after a gas leak led to boilers breaking down across County Durham.

Last Monday, an accident with a digger causes a major rupture in one the mains pipes which in turn caused a gas leak for thousands of residents in the Bishops Auckland, Crook and Shildon areas, according to the Northern Echo.

Now it appears a knock-on effect of the gas leak is boilers breaking down, with local plumbers claiming to have answered over 400 call-outs in the past week.

Glenn Roe, of Perfect Plumbing and Heating told the paper: "Gas supplies in Bishop Auckland and Shildon have been left on but this in itself is causing boiler breakdowns and gas fire problems due to gas pressure.

"Some valves have been replaced but then the same problem has arisen and they have broken again the next day."

Thankfully, gas pressure has now been restored in the area, but the financial implications of the incidents are still being felt today.

John O'Grady of Northern Gas Networks said: "I would like to apologise on behalf of Northern Gas Networks to the people of Crook and the surrounding area for the inconvenience they have experienced.
