Thousands of elderly people across London will be warmer this winter, thanks to a new project.
The National Energy Action (NEA) has set up a project aiming to disseminate energy advice to pensioners and those on low incomes.
Volunteers and staff in the voluntary sector will be educated in energy facts and figures, so they can pass information on issues such as grant assistance to the communities that need it most.
Entitled Affordable Warmth for London's Elderly, the project's main aims are to allow people to remain independent in their own homes, as well as to improve the number of people taking up energy efficiency grants by the older population.
NEA Project Co-ordinator in London, John Simpson, said: "London is vast and the incidence of poor housing and vulnerable households struggling to heat their homes is worrying.
"This project is a way to bring advice, help and guidance through volunteers and staff of trusted organisation to elderly and vulnerable people in the capital from others who otherwise may be overlooked."
According to figures from the NEA, fuel poverty has increased to 2.5 million households in England and nearly four million across the UK in total.
