Thousands of households across the UK that struggle to pay heating bills every winter could benefit from a new scheme designed to help out vulnerable people.
National Energy Action has announced details of the Warm Homes Campaign Award Scheme 2007 which will provide around ten grants of around £500 to non profit and statutory organisations.
Each organisation will then be able to use their grant to highlight fuel poverty issues and the work local charities are doing to help vulnerable people.
On the ground level, it is hoped this will help raise awareness of schemes designed to help low-income families and the elderly to manage financially this winter and ease the burden of costly heating bills.
The scheme has been set up in conjunction with Energy Action Scotland and supported by eaga.
Maria Wardrobe, Acting Director of Communications at NEA, said: "We are delighted to launch this award scheme and are grateful for the support of eaga.
"It is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the problem of achieving affordable warmth faced by vulnerable customers and struggling families."
According to a recent survey, 34% of people in fuel poverty would not ask for financial help is they could not afford to pay their heating bills.
Energy companies including Powergen have targets of helping 250,000 households out of fuel poverty by 2010.
