Never too early to prepare for winter weather

20 August 2007

It may still officially be summer, but a leading fuel poverty charity has issued a reminder to low-income households that winter is on its way.

National Energy Action (NEA) has said that the cold and wet weather experienced in the UK in recent weeks could be an indication that more of the same could be on its way.

It has advised elderly and disabled householders as well as those households on low-incomes to ensure they have access to the funds and grants they are eligible for.

The charity also warns households to make sure they take adequate steps to insulate their homes in preparation for a cold snap with draught-proofing around doors and windows as well as lagging on hot water cylinders and pipes.

"We urge vulnerable householders to maximise their income and access grants that may be available to them to improve the energy efficiency of their homes," Maria Wardrobe, NEA Director of Communications, said.

"Although winter is a way off yet it is important to act now," she added.

According to figures from the Office of National Statistics 25,700 people died as a result of cold winter weather and inadequate heating provision between 2005 and 2006.
