Village hall heats up with renewable energy

4 September 2007

A group of villagers in Cumbria are to benefit from heat generated from renewable energy with the installation of new technology fitted in their village hall.

Local people living in Lowick are to gain an air source heat pump fitted by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA) in Lowick Community Hall.

The new technology has the power to provide more than double the amount of energy than is required to operate it.

The installation is part of a project developed by NEA and funded by ScottishPower, with the aim of bringing environmental and economic benefits to the local community.

Councillor Liz Vaughan, Chair of The Lowick Community Hall's new Management Committee said: "We trust that this innovative energy efficient system will encourage interest and ideas for the project at Lowick and change the premises into an attractive warm atmosphere for local people to hold meetings and functions."

Walter French, Energy Efficiency Manager from ScottishPower, added: "This air source heat pump installation provides a great opportunity to raise awareness throughout the local community of energy efficiency measures and renewable energy technologies, much of which can be applied to domestic homes."

Community halls are often energy inefficient buildings because of the poor levels of insulation. Recent increases in energy prices as well as funding restrictions have made it more difficult for halls to stay warm.
