Elderly advised to have their boilers checked

15 October 2007

In the wake of the Met Office's announcement that this winter will be much cooler than last year's, Help the Aged have launched a campaign for Britain's elderly to check their boilers ahead of the cold snap.

The charity says that many energy suppliers offer free boiler checks for the over-60s - and that OAPs should take them up on the offer to make sure they keep warm this winter.

Help the Aged is running the awareness scheme in conjunction with British Gas.

Commenting on the scheme, Head of Safety at the firm Chris Bielby said: "By ensuring your boiler is functioning properly not only will you reduce the risk of having a cold or damp home and make financial savings, you could also save your life."

Mr Bielby went on to explain that engineers run tests to see not just if the boiler is faulty, but also if it is emitting potentially deadly carbon monoxide gas.

Spokesperson for the charity Anna Pearson added: "It is vital that older people take measures to maintain the warmth in their homes. It is also important they know that they are not alone in preparing for the winter."

Help the Aged say that pensioners can easily check to see if they are eligible for the free boiler service by phoning their SeniorLine on 0808 800 6565.
