Financial services group Halifax has advised British householders to 'winter-proof' their properties in preparation for the colder weather ahead.
Getting boilers serviced to make sure of their smooth running, as well as setting thermostats to at least ten degrees and ensuring that lofts were well insulated, were strongly advised by the firm.
"Winter is the time when we retreat to the warmth and safety of our homes, but before doing so there are some essential checks that need to be carried out," said Halifax Home Insurance's Vicky Emmott.
"Many [insurance] claims could be avoided if householders spent a small amount of time preparing for the coming bad weather," she added.
The importance of domestic winter-proofing was brought home last week by a report from the National Pensioners Convention.
As many as ten elderly people could die per hour due to freezing weather, this winter, the group claimed.
The Met Office is also forecasting a colder winter this year than for 2006.
