Improving energy efficiency cuts bills

26 November 2007

Making a home more energy efficient can prove expensive, new research from Alliance & Leicester Personal Loans has shown.

However, even a four-figure outlay - with the research from the personal loans provider showing that making a three-bedroom semi more carbon neutral can cost £9,000 - can soon be recouped through savings on energy bills.

Alliance & Leicester says that the average family home would see bills cut by around 15% through improving insulation, replacing old boilers and installing double glazing.

Richard Al-Dabbagh, Senior Personal Loans Manager at Alliance & Leicester, commented: "Nowadays more and more people are giving environmental considerations and their carbon footprints a higher priority.

"This includes trying to make their homes as energy efficiency as possible. There are lots of diverse ways homeowners can try and make their homes greener but it all depends on how much people want to spend."

Chairman of the Environment Agency Sir John Harman agreed that "more and more" Britons are trying to make their carbon footprints smaller in the face of climate change worries.

"Currently 70 per cent of homeowners claim to know little or nothing at all about sustainable homes - however, research shows they are becoming increasingly interested in the subject," he said.
