Fuel poverty deadline 'will be missed'

5 February 2008

The government will not meet its own pledge to end fuel poverty by 2010, advisers have suggested.

According to the Fuel Poverty Advisory Group, which is working with the government on its heating project, more than one million households will still be suffering from the problem by the deadline.

Peter Lehmann, the group's chairman, said: "Unfortunately, the government, in spite of its record on fuel poverty for some years and its continuing interest in the issue, has not been willing to take the difficult decisions needed to make further progress in eradicating fuel poverty."

Talking to the BBC, the advisor added that the government is set to cut spending on grants given to fuel poverty sufferers by 25% over the next three years.

Elsewhere, a report from charity Save the Children UK has found that 20% of British families cannot afford to heat their homes properly.

Four of the UK's 'big six' gas and electricity providers have announced increases in bills averaging 15% over the past two months.
