Attempting to repair faulty gas central heating systems without the help of a professional could be extremely dangerous, consumers are being warned.
According to research carried out for Gas Safe Register, more than four out of ten people have tinkered with gas appliances to avoid calling out a tradesman.
Furthermore, one in ten said they were prepared to fit a gas fire themselves, even though 82% of respondents deemed this to be hazardous.
Ann Robinson, director of public awareness at Gas Safe Register, pointed out that badly repaired or poorly maintained gas appliances are a major cause of carbon monoxide poisoning.
"If anyone thinks DIY gas work can save them money, they should think again," she stressed.
"For the sake of a few pounds, they risk endangering the life of anyone who lives in that property - a life that is priceless."
Households that take out heating cover could save on repairs, since regular safety checks and maintenance is often included in policies.
Research carried out by uSwitch.com last year revealed that six in ten UK households have no heating cover in place.
