British Gas saw strong growth in its installation and services division during the first six months of this year, despite an overall fall in profits at the company. Demand from consumers wanting new central heating systems helped the energy supplier achieve a 35% increase in operating profits. In its services division, British Gas engineers carried out over 150,000 jobs. Meanwhile, 54,000 central heating installations were undertaken, which according to the company was broadly in line with 2007 levels in spite of the difficult economic climate. "Operating profit increased by 35% to £85 million, reflecting the strong growth in higher margin care products outside the original central heating range, combined with the continued focus on cost control," the company said. The announcement comes after British Gas became the second energy supplier to declare another increase in its gas and electricity prices. Electricity bills will rise by 9%, while gas bills will increase by 35%. Heating cover customers will therefore face higher costs for their gas central heating.
