Rumours have surfaced that broadband service provider AOL is to shortly release its own cheap VoIP package in response to rival ISP Wanadoo's release yesterday.
And according to an interview with AOL and Net Imperative, the new inexpensive phone service could be introduced to the UK within the month.
The report quotes Jonathan Miller the AOL chief executive as saying the AOL Internet Phone Service will also make use of the instant messenger "buddy list" facility and will be rolled out first to AOL members in limited locations through the UK.
Users to the new phone service will be able to use their existing phone sets through an adapter that connects the line to their broadband routers.
Exact costs have not yet been revealed although they are expected to challenge Wanadoo's four pound a month deal when officially unveiled.
