The Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services (ICSTIS) has today called for all home phone operators to be more stringent in checking that companies leasing out premium rate numbers are not scammers.
The telecoms regulator revealed that it will remove companies' rights to lease out premium-rate numbers if the firms fail to correct their ways.
"What we want is for the terminating networks to stop leasing out their lines to the likes of Mr Donald Duck or whatever for this kind of rubbish," Rob Dwight, an ICSTIS spokesman, said to the Scotsman.
"If they don't show that they are being diligent in checking out who is making money on their lines then we shall take this up with Ofcom and have their right to operate these networks taken away."
New regulations are also expected to be introduced as a result to help combat scammers in the near future.
