New body to push through residential internet telephony

29 March 2005

An industry body has been formed to help ease the integration of home internet telephony services on a national scale.

The Internet Telephony Services Providers' Association (ITSPA) will oversee and undertake various codes of practices such as its newest version 1.0 of its consumer code.

"This is a world first, and vital to ensure the rapid uptake by the mass-market of this new generation of services," commented ITSPA council member Eli Katz.

"We believe that this is a 'Fair CoP' [code of practice]; and we intend, as ITSPA, to act efficiently in administering and enforcing it."

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has welcomed the move.

Claire Hobson, head of telecoms policy at the DTI, added: "ITSPA's launch is a good step towards putting the interests of consumers at the forefront of the voice-over internet protocol industry.

"We'll certainly be working closely with the new association in our work to encourage the development of VoIP in the UK."

ITSPA membership has been hailed by analysts as likely to prove to be an official cornerstone of the rapidly developing industry.
