TalkTalk replicates BT's stealth home phone policy

30 March 2005

Communications company Carphone Warehouse has emulated BT's recent controversial home phone price changes by switching its TalkTalk billing to include the two hour period between six am and eight am within the more expensive rates.

The move comes just two months after BT altered its time bracket which is known to have unsettled more than three million home telephone customers.

Now concern is growing that these two examples of what has been termed "stealth price hikes" could have a dominoes effect on other home phone providers.

Jon Miller, director at uSwitch.com, commented "BT introduced this stealth rise in February this year and it is disappointing to see TalkTalk following suit, especially in the manner with which they announced it.

"I believe it won't be too long before we see other companies increase their morning call prices - BT's move earlier this year seems to have given them an excuse to follow suit."

Mr Miller added: "As more companies follow suit, it is becoming increasingly important for consumers to look at the best deal which suits their needs."
