BT's fixed-and-mobile phone ready for release

6 April 2005

A report published today has suggested that BT's fixed-and-mobile hybrid phone could be unveiled within weeks.

According to ZDNet UK, BT's chief executive Ben Verwaayen recently let slip that Project Bluephone was nearing completion.

The chief was heard commenting on the sophisticated communications system: "We said we'd launch it in spring. Look around, spring is in the air today."

BT first introduced Project Bluephone in May last year and had previously claimed that the system would not be ready until at earliest the end of 2005.

But now analysts are predicting an earlier than expected roll out.

The Bluephone will allow customers to use a single device that can switch between fixed home and mobile phone networks.

Britain's leading telecoms group claims that the phone represents the first step towards convergence and will remove the need to own more than one phone.
