118 services under threat

7 April 2005

The UK's 118 services are under mounting pressure today following the implementation of a series of improvements by rival internet facilities.

The directory enquiries market is still in a relative state of uncertainty following the opening up of the industry and now internet firms are attempting to exploit this and gain market dominance.

Today's relaunch of 192.com's site typifies the moves being made by internet groups, Digital Bulletin writes.

Confirmed this morning, 192.com has upgraded its search tool for finding people and services and has also announced it is to spend £1 million on advertising the service during the next six months.

The company currently boasts 17 per cent of the online directories market and hopes the move will challenge traditional offline brands such as BT, Thomson and Yell, as well as 118 services.

Keith Marsden managing director of 192.com commented: "Our objective was to address all of the limitations of all the current services and to present one central resource, which gives consumers and business access to all of the information on business that they could possibly need.

"We want to deliver clearer search results and help users find the information they need quickly. In the future we plan to add house histories, property prices, more local information and specialist biographies in a Who's Who type way."

The site currently has around four million subscribers.
