The advent of the ground-breaking voice over internet protocol has been described by industry experts as a gold rush for the telephony market.
Broadband equipment maker Sandvine has said that already the telecommunications market has seen more than 1,100 new suppliers open up worldwide, all hoping to cash in on the new phone service.
"ISPs can enhance the broadband experience by prioritising or reserving bandwidth for latency-sensitive and interactive applications like VoIP," said Sandvine's Chris Colman.
"For ISPs planning to bring their own VoIP services to market, it is imperative they understand how many minutes are already being consumed by subscribers."
According to EE Times, Sandvine's research on VoIP was based on the analysis of traffic on its customers' networks, about 20 million broadband users worldwide.
Market research firm In-Stat recently predicted that that the mass migration to VoIP will have been completed by 2014 at the latest.
