Carphone Warehouse home phone service helps profits

7 June 2005

Carphone Warehouse has announced a 34 per cent rise in profits in line with forecasts, with some of the success being attributed to the company's cheap home phone service, TalkTalk.

Pre tax profits were up to £102.1 million, compared to £76.3 million at the same time last year. The company gained 6.5 million customers over the last 12 months.

It now boasts 920,000 customers signed up to its TalkTalk service, which allows those on it to make free phone calls to one another.

The phone service providers said it continues to trade strongly this year, and prospects for the future are positive. New customer connections have risen by 20 per cent in the last nine weeks.

Chief executive Charles Dunstone said: "Connections growth of 20 per cent is particularly encouraging, especially in the context of a weaker consumer environment.

"The outlook for our mobile services operations is very promising," he added.

Compare home telephone suppliers and save an average £170 a year.
