BT prepares to launch Bluephone

13 June 2005

British Telecom (BT) has announced plans to release its long awaited Bluephone, a converged mobile handset.

The phone will route calls over a fixed BT broadband network through a Bluetooth access point in the home.

Then, when the user leaves the house, the phone will automatically switch to a cellular network.

It is thought that such a device could be a driving force behind the rollout of VoIP technology, and would have a profound effect on the price of mobile calls, resulting in cheaper phone bills.

Analyst at Disruptive Analysis, Dean Bubley, told ZDNet: "If you look at VoIP in the fixed world, it's already demolishing many fixed operators revenue streams, which has led some incumbents to launch their own VoIP and wholesale services."
