Fightback against silent phone calls

21 June 2005

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) and Ofcom teaming up tackle the issue of 'silent calls'.

The telecoms watchdog has welcomed the establishment of new guidelines by the DMA following research revealing that 22 per cent of those who received such calls felt anxious.

Phone owners receive an average of 5.7 silent calls per month according to the study, with some respondents complaining that they received as many as two or three silent calls per day.

Under the new DMA guidelines, telemarketers will be required to give a freephone number to the person called, as well as the name of their company.

A DMA spokeswoman said: "The DMA are trying to take the lead on this issue. Ofcom welcomed the research and we will be working with them on joint initiatives to tackle this issue."
