Ofcom unveils new home phone regulations

23 June 2005

Ofcom has unveiled in-depth details of a new regulatory approach for the UK's fixed line telecoms market.

The watchdog's objectives include driving down the price of calls, connections and services for consumers and businesses and encouraging innovation in new technologies such as broadband and voice over internet protocol (VoIP).

Ofcom also hopes to introduce new measures that will deal more effectively with anti-competitive behaviour.

David Currie, chairman of Ofcom, said: "We believe these proposals have the potential to encourage more sustainable competition, more services, lower prices and greater consumer choice."

One of the major changes will be the establishment of the Access Services division, which will be responsible for local loop unbundling (LLU), wholesale line rental and backhaul products.
