Rise of VoIP welcomed

5 October 2005

Technology that allows home telephone calls to be made through the computer is to make calling easier and cheaper

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, where telephone calls are mare using a broadband internet connection, is very popular with users, especially for long-distance calls.

However, the crammed lines could present some difficulties for individuals who use their phones for working from home.

New super-fast broadband provider Be could see its 24 megabytes-per-second (Mbps) service jammed by VoIP connections.

Be spokesman Paul Smyth tries to reassure customers that things would be ok.

"We're not squeezing everybody's data into one pipe," he told trade magaine Zdnet.

Richard Edwards of analyst Butler Group was positive about the new technology."If home workers start investing in this kit themselves they will become familiar with it," Mr Edwards said.

"It will make it simpler when firms decide to roll VoIP out enterprise-wide."
