Home phones provide winter pep

24 November 2005

Judicious use of the landline will cheer you up during the dark winter nights, according to a survey by the Post Office.

Home phones are picked up in unison at this time of year as we seek a decent chat with family or friends to remind us that life isn't really all that bad amid the enveloping fog, rain and darkness.

A phone call only came second to a warming glass of wine in the poll, with 16 per cent of those questioned saying that a hearty chat is the best way to banish those blues.

Moreover, it was in fact the top choice of the younger age groups, with those in the 16-24 and 24-35 brackets naming it their ideal evening perk.

Nick Jones, head of Post Office HomePhone said: "It's amazing how quickly freezing temperatures, long nights and winter rain can dampen our mood. Our survey shows that the simple, inexpensive things such as making a phone call or watching a movie can really help lift our spirits."

A dose of chocolate and a relaxing bath followed phone calls in the list of favoured means of unwinding.

Compare home telephone suppliers and save an average £170 a year.
