Home phones and mobiles set to merge

25 November 2005

Pilot tests on new technology which would allow mobile and fixed-line phones to become one and the same have been undertaken in Denmark.

The concept was tested by TeliaSonera, whose wireless telephone functions as a conventional home phone on a fixed-line network and, when used outside of the house, can switch to a mobile network and be used as such.

Fifty families took part in the trials and gave positive feedback, appearing glad of the chance to use the same phone, telephone number and invoice for their fixed-line and mobile calls.

Kennet Radne, senior vice president of products and services at TeliaSonera, said: "This is yet another proof that simplicity and user-friendliness are decisive in our attempt to take the lead in the migration to mobile and internet-based services.

"It shows how important it is that operators, manufacturers and users closely cooperate around future telephone solutions."

Motorola are working with the firm to carry out the tests, the second phase of which commences soon. The technology looks set to sweep Europe - it is likely to be introduced in Sweden in the near future, with Ericsson a key player in conducting technical tests.
