India-based Bharti Global is to provide mobile phone services in Jersey.
The company, which is the largest provider of cellular phone services in India, has been granted a class II licence. Bharti had surprised islanders when it made a bid for a licence to run second and third generation mobile services a few months ago, the Jersey Evening Post said.
The licence given to Bharti will run for 12 years from next January. The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) will allow locals to make representations or objections to the proposals until January 11th.
"The JCRA is of the opinion that the grant of a licence will help to ensure that telecommunications services are provided, both within Jersey and between Jersey and the rest of the world, to satisfy all current and prospective demands," said JCRA executive director Bill Brown.
He added that the JCRA hoped the deal "will help promote competition among persons engaged in commercial activities connected with telecommunications in Jersey".
Bharti's mobile phone network has over 12 million customers in India alone.
Compare home telephone suppliers and save an average £170 a year.
