Consumer confusion over home phone market

Almost half of all home phone users are not taking advantage of the UK's competitive home phone market because of confusion over the costs of switching.

Price comparison and switching website uSwitch.com found that 47% of home phone users who have never switched provider believed that it would cost them money to do so, with over six million believing that changing their home phone supplier would lead to a loss of services.

Nearly a third thought that they would have to change their number if they switched to a new home phone deal.

The company says that these myths surrounding the home phone market mean that many millions of consumers are missing out on an average annual saving of £120.

Chris Williams, home phone product manager for uSwitch.com, said: "Consumers need to understand the facts so the myths around switching can be dispelled. Changing your supplier can save you money without suffering the loss of any services.

"Not only can people save as much as £170 per year, but they can also ensure they are provided with the best possible service available.

The home phone market was deregulated 22 years ago, but consumers have been slow to take advantage of the competition.

"So long after deregulation, it's worrying so many consumers remain hampered by age old myths," Mr Williams added.

"There is now significant competition in the home telephony market, including a host of household names. Consumers can switch with confidence, choosing the best package without losing services they rely on."
