Carphone Warehouse shakes up home phone market

11 April 2006

Mobile phone retailer the Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that it will be offering its home phone customers free calls and broadband.

Reports of the move emerged over the weekend and the company confirmed the details of the plan in a statement.

Customers of its Talk Talk home phone deal will receive unlimited local and national landline calls, unlimited international calls to 28 countries and up to 8Mb broadband for a monthly fee of £9.99.

Customers will also pay a line rental of £11 each month.

The offer will be open to 70% of the UK, as the company has said it will be unbundling 1,000 exchanges first of all, allowing it to install its own equipment in BT phone exchanges.

It hopes to complete the unbundling by May of next year.

Charles Dunstone, its chief executive, said: "Our approach to business has always been about how little we can afford to charge our customers, rather than how much we can get away with.

"So today we are cutting more than 60% off the cost of the average UK residential telephony and broadband bill, and additionally providing unlimited calls to 28 international destinations.

"The residential telecoms market in the UK will never be the same again. From today, broadband is a right, not a privilege."
