UK phone charges not most expensive, says global survey

19 April 2006

A survey examining home phone markets from around the world has concluded that South African phone charges are among the highest in the world.

The study conducted by NUS Consulting and involving the UK market, found that the African nation had charges that hindered the country's development.

"Our tariffs for national long-distance calls and cell phones are still the highest of the major world economies with which we do business," Stephen Dolk of NUS Consulting told Business Day newspaper.

According to the BBC, a three-minute long-distance call costs $0.34 in South Africa, as opposed to $0.08 in Sweden, which was the cheapest price found in the survey.

The UK did not feature as the priciest country in any regard. Only in Belgium were national local calls more expensive than in South Africa.

International calls were most costly in the US, followed by South Africa.
