Complaints upheld against home phone Skype ad

24 April 2006

The Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) has upheld two complaints from BT over an advert offering free Skype calls over home phones.

VoSKY's advert for its "internet phone wizard" appeared in the national press.

It said: "Get Skype on your home phone! Make Skype calls using your home phone! Enjoy the benefits of making and receiving free Skype calls worldwide & landline calls from your everyday phone."

BT complained that the advert was misleading by describing the service as "free" and also argued that it failed to make clear that the offer was only open to users with a broadband connection.

In response, VoSKY argued that the service was only not free to the limited number of customers with a metered internet account and that Skype could be used with any stable internet connection, but the ASA upheld both complaints.

It has instructed VoSKY to make it clear in future ads that a broadband internet connection is required to use Skype products to their optimum level.
