Fixed line/mobile convergence set to increase

27 April 2006

Fixed line phone operators will be the driving force behind an increase in convergence between fixed line and mobile services, according to a report.

Informa Telecoms and Media's study predicted that there would be 92 million subscribers to fixed/mobile convergence (FMB) services by 2011 worldwide, or 3% of all subscriptions.

The company argued that fixed-line firms would "aggressively" roll out converged services in order to stop the threat of people using their mobiles instead of their landlines.

"FMC's share of total communications revenues will be small for several years, but this is just the start," said Paul Merry, a senior analyst at Informa.

The report also predicted an increase in the sale of handsets that can be used for mobile or home phone calls to 5% of all global handset sales.

"Fixed operators are viewing FMC as a positive step towards protecting their market share in an era where technology and convenience are creating an increasing momentum in favour of fixed mobile substitution," explained Mark Newman, the firm's chief research officer.
