Ofcom reveals winners in bandwidth auction

3 May 2006

Telecoms regulator Ofcom today revealed the 12 winning companies in its auction of wireless bandwidth, heralding the development of new, innovative telecoms and communications services.

Ofcom confirmed that it has awarded 12 Wireless Telegraphy Act licences for the frequencies 1781.7-1785MHz paired with 1876.7-1880MHz as a result of its first spectrum auction.

The licences are technology neutral, which means that companies successful in the auction will have the freedom to use the spectrum how they wish, within certain technical limits.

It is thought that BT, cable and Wireless and O2 may use the licences to build private mobile phone networks for companies.

IT Week predicts that these networks could be popular with large businesses as 25 per cent of employee calls are thought to be made internally within company buildings.
