Job losses rumoured at home phone provider

8 May 2006

Home phone provider ntl is reported to be on the verge of announcing thousands of job cuts, according to reports in several newspapers.

It is thought that the company will announce the cuts during its first quarter results this week.

As many as 6,000 jobs could go, with the lowest estimates suggesting a loss of 4,000 jobs.

The move follows the takeover of smaller rival Telewest and the recent merger with Virgin mobile.

As a result of the Virgin merger worth £985 million, ntl will become the first company in the UK to be able to offer the quadruple services of mobile, fixed-line, broadband and digital TV.

Other companies are expected to follow suit, with this kind of convergence being seen as the future of the telecoms industry. BT and BSkyB are seen by many as the most likely firms to enter the "quadruple play" market.
