BT to complete £1bn phone line upgrade

24 May 2006

The UK's most popular home phone provider BT has announced that it is to add 1,300 people to its workforce in order to complete its £1 billion upgrade of phone lines across the UK.

The investment is part of the company's efforts to improve local area networks around the country.

Its Openreach arm is responsible for the implementation of the investment, which should help develop BT's local networks and enable them to cope with the latest demands such as high speed internet access.

"This major investment in infrastructure and new engineers will help us in the continuing improvement in service to our customers and end users," said a BT spokesman.

Ten regions will receive a cut of a £100 million investment over the next year.
