People using their mobile phones at work are helping to drive fixed-line and mobile convergence, according to a new report.
The analyst firm IDC found that 28% of employees are using their mobile phones as their main communicator, which means that they are also using telephony outside the control of their business and its security systems.
This in turn has driven companies to come up with solutions, which has led to the promotion of converged technology to encourage fixed-line use.
IDC found that so-called private branch exchange (PBX) systems, which set up a mini phone network, were one such converged solution.
"The adoption of mobile PBX extensions provides users with a remote control to their desktop phone," said Nora Freedman, research analyst with the Enterprise Networks group.
"Features such as single number dialing, corporate directory access, and a common voicemail box for mobile and desktop phones are just some examples of how these solutions empower knowledge workers and increase productivity from their mobile device of choice."
