New technology looks set to change the way in which we use our fixed home phone number, according to new research.
JupiterReserch found that in the future, we will be able to take calls wherever we are, thanks to new fixed-mobile telephone services that are appealing strongly to UK consumers.
Voice over internet protocol calling, or VoIP, will have a significant impact, the company said.
It found that 17% of consumers in Europe are already interested in VoIP telephony and 21% are interested in diverting their home telephone to a mobile phone to answer calls while away from home.
"VoIP will convert the home telephone from analogue to digital, and once digital, the home telephone number will become unfixed. It will no longer only be available just at home, but also in the office, in internet cafes, and even on mobile phones," said Ian Fogg, a senior analyst at JupiterResearch.
"Broadband Internet access is powering this transformation of the home telephone," he added.
