Home phone provider ntl:Telewest has completed its takeover of mobile phone company Virgin Mobile, paving the way for the formation of a new "quadruple play" company in the UK.
The new company, branded under the Virgin name, will be able to offer consumers TV, internet, mobile and home phone services.
For the moment, the different companies will continue to operate independently, but the deal is sure to change the future of the telecommunications industry and improve deals offered to consumers.
"This is a transformational deal for ntl:Telewest and good news for UK consumers," said ntl:Telewest's chief executive Steve Burch.
"Virgin Mobile has a justified reputation for being one of the country's most customer-focused companies. This combined with ntl:Telewest's portfolio of competitively-priced, cutting edge products, will create a formidable competitor in the UK's fast changing communications and entertainment industries."
Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, added: "We've created a unique organisation - a new, soon-to-be-branded Virgin company - which will offer the very finest in "quadruple" - the best-value, most exciting TV, broadband, mobile and phone services in Britain."
