BT welcomes end to price controls

21 July 2006

BT has welcomed the decision of the telecoms regulator Ofcom to lift price controls on the cost of its line rental and calls after 22 years.

Ofcom had placed restrictions on BT's charges since it was privatised back in 1984, but has decided that much greater competition and a higher number of customers switching to other home phone suppliers has made controls unnecessary.

Price control levels have been reviewed several times, most recently in June 2002, with a number of restrictions placed on BT's pricing for certain services.

"Ofcom's decision is good news for customers," argued Ian Livingston, chief executive of BT Retail.

"The UK has enjoyed one of the most competitive telecoms market in the world for a number of years and a freer BT will deliver even better value and innovation for our residential customers.

"We will now look at how we can simplify our pricing structures and make them more user-friendly."
