Ofcom announces telephone QoS comparison website

28 July 2006

Communications regulator Ofcom has announced the launch of a new online service that allows those searching for a good home telephone deal to compare the quality of service (QoS) of different providers

Known as TopComm the service is designed to address the fact that QoS is consistently identified by consumers as an important factor in deciding whether to switch to another fixed-line provider, according to Ofcom research.

Among the factors available to compare are the percentage of orders that are completed on or before the agreed date; the faults reported per 100 lines on a quarterly basis; the percentage of faults repaired within the agreed service time; and the percentage of complaints processed within 28 calendar days.

All large fixed line telephone providers are obliged to take part in the scheme.

Cost continues to be the biggest factor for consumers when choosing a home telephone provider and the service is complimentary to that of price comparison services, with uSwitch.com being the only price comparison website accredited by Ofcom's PASS scheme.

The TopComm website address is www.topcomm.org.uk.
