BT cuts call package prices

1 August 2006

BT is lowering the prices of its inclusive call packages for home phone customers.

The company has made the cuts after a comprehensive review. It has made widespread changes to a range of different tariffs.

Its Together Option 2 and 3 customers will see prices slashed by almost a third, with the monthly price for the evening and weekend call package (Option 2) falling by 28% to £3.95 and the anytime calling package (Option 3) seeing a 31% cut to £9.95.

Meanwhile, BT is also introducing price changes that will be offered to all its customers. From 15th August, all BT customers will be offered free UK evening and weekend calls for a year if they sign up to the company for 18 months.

The cost of calling many non-geographic numbers is also set to be cut in October.

Internet phone call costs have been cut too. BT Broadband Talk customers will be able to make anytime UK calls for just £4.95 a month, a price cut of 29%.

Chris Williams, home phone product manager at independent comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, said the price cuts were good to see.

"Consumers will benefit from these changes as they now come in line with other major competitors. However, it's disappointing to see BT move to per minute billing rather than per second - this will hit consumers in the pocket, albeit discreetly," he added.
