The sound quality of internet telephone calls, known as VoIP calls, is still letting the technology down.
Extensive research results from VoIP firm Brix Networks found that nearly one in five internet telephone test calls experienced unacceptable call quality over the last 18 months.
The data was collected from the company's free, voice quality testing portal that enables consumers to independently measure the quality of their broadband internet phone connections.
Almost one million VoIP phone tests have been conducted on the TestYourVoIP.com site, meaning the results should be comprehensive.
Data suggested that quality rates actually decreased steadily since the site's launch in 2004.
"Over the last few years, the global market for consumer VoIP services has grown to nearly 20 million subscribers. These results from TestYourVoIP.com indicate that during this same period internet call quality has declined," said Kaynam Hedayat, vice president, engineering, and chief technology officer at Brix.
"Providers of internet phone services will need to concentrate on the root causes of call quality degradation."
