Ofcom: Consumers more willing to switch phone companies

10 August 2006

Customers are increasingly willing to switch their phone company, according to new industry research.

The UK Office of Communications (Ofcom) has released its Communications Market Report for 2005, which involves a study into consumer trends towards communication services.

And it seems more than a third of customers are open to change when it comes to their home phone contract with 34 per cent of consumers now using a phone company other than BT for some or all of their landline services.

The figures also revealed that as of March 2006, there were 6.1 million phone lines using a carrier pre-selection provider for calls – an increase from the 4.9 million in March 2005. Of these customers, 2.9 million were on wholesale line rental packages and no longer have a billing arrangement with BT but instead opt to pay an alternative provider for line rental and calls.

There are also an additional 4.5 million customers who are using cable networks for their home phone services.
