BT begins 21st century network transformation

4 September 2006

BT has announced it will begin steps in the transition to upgrade all its UK customers into its 21st century network (21CN).

The upgrade will begin in Cardiff and will deliver intelligent communications infrastructure designed to make people's lives more productive.

BT feels that 21CN will have a significant impact on the way people communicate and improve voice, data and video services.

The new network installation will take place in three stages with phase one – running from November 2006 to March 2007 – and updating some 10% of customer lines in Cardiff.

Paul Reynolds, BT spokesman, said: "Years of planning, testing and development will culminate in South Wales in three months when we start the exciting process of bringing the world's most advanced national communications infrastructure to everyone in the UK.

"This is a world leading programme that will provide customers with a radically improved experience and new products and services faster. 21st Century Network is an unprecedented programme of cooperation right across the communications industry and a world's first for the UK."
